Who wants to Party!?
What’s shakin fellow film geeks!? My name is Tobias and I’m here to bring you all some super sweet news and reviews on upcoming darker themed movies. Sound good? I thought so. Both Chris and I can have some VERY different views of films so I feel we can bring a great contrast to our reviews and give some of you guys some more insight your favorite films. I’m HUGE on horror so lots of my posts will be stories on horror films new and old. I’m also a sucker for gritty dark drams so you can look for some sweet bites of those also. Well I’m very excited to get this project rolling and I know Chris is as well.
To christen this as my first post I’m going to give you my TOP TEN Upcoming films and why I’m banging my head in impatient frustration waiting for them to be released.
10. Attack the block- This little alien invasion flick seems to be exploding with buzz the past few months as its made its way over to the good ol USA from the UK. The alien action looks like a blast to watch and there are a few familiar faces in the cast if you’re a fan of the genre. With vampires and crappy ghosts being the main genre fodder at the theater right now I think a good ol’ rock-em-sock-em Alien film is just what we need.
.
9. Don’t be afraid of the dark- Guillermo Del Toro has always been a fan favorite since “Pans Labyrinth” So having his influence over a spooky ghost movie is a very exciting thing. Thee Katie Holmes staring film looks to be haunting as well as visually unsettling, I’m sure we will all be careful of venturing into the dark after giving this movie a watch. Who isn’t afraid of creepy ass monsters hiding in your sheets?
8. Prometheus- Not much has really been said about the supposed prequel of Ridley Scotts “Alien” besides the nice group of cast members that has been put together. The plot has some similarities of the original Alien and its being said this film will give some explanation to a few of the unanswered questions the first film left us with. Having Ridley bacl in the directors chair doesn’t hurt a bit and I am looking forward to getting some more info.
7. The Thing- With a plot so similar to the first this “Prequel” seems to really be a remake in disguise. This doesn’t really affect my anticipation for it much, I am excited for this movie. I love Mary Elizabeth Winsted and it’s cool seeing her play more of an adult character and I’m hoping the movie will give her a chance to kick some alien ass. Of course the huge concern with everyone is how much of a ratio will the use of CGI and practical effects be, with the majority of fans wanting practical puppets like the original film. Only time will tell.
6. Fright night- Now I’m not big horror purist like some but I’m not super crazy about remakes either. That being said “Fright Night” 2011 doesn’t look half bad. The original was nothing amazing to me so I don’t feel like its complete sacrilege to give it an update. Colin Farrell pulls off the handsome and hot vampire next door while Anton Yelchin has proved to have some acting chops. The visuals look a little iffy in some of the previews but I’m hoping for the best.
5. Contagion- With an all star cast and an interesting (If not overused) plot makes Contagion a film I am VERY much looking forward to. It’s not often that we see the likes of Kate Winslet or Matt Damon in these types of Genre films anymore and I’m hoping to see some great performances.
4. Final destination 5- It’s pretty much Common knowledge that “The Final Destination” was a complete insult (Sprry Chris its true!) to the rest of the series no matter the box office. So to make up for it (We all know this was coming whether the last one sucked or not based solely on the box office success) the fifth film in the Final Destination franchise will be released later this month. And you know what? It actually looks pretty damn good. Wave HI if you see me in line opening night.
3. Rise of the planet of the apes- I’ve always been a fan of the “Ape” films, from the original films to the remake (Yes I was one of the few who liked it) so naturally I’m very curious to see how this entry into the series will play out. The effects looks pretty sweet and you cant go wrong using Andy Serkis as the basis for a CGI creature. I mean he could animate a rock and it’d still be entertaining. I have never been a big James Franco fan but from what I’ve seen in clips and trailers he’s done alright
2. Melancholia- With the staggering amount of controversy Lars von Triar’s last film “Antichrist” raised its no surprise I was also sucked into the hype, and once I was able to view the films I will say it could have been better. Not that it wasn’t good, it just was built up to more than what it really was. The stunning visuals and outstanding performance of Charlotte Gainsbourg in the end made the film worthwhile. Melancholia looks to be a whole different animal, I’m a sucker for an apocalyptic tale as much as anyone else and the imagery looks even more beautiful than the previous film. Throw in Mrs. Gainsbourg again and I will be first in line.
1. The girl with the dragon tattoo- I’m a big fans of the book and the character of Lisbeth Salander, but the original Swedish films left me wanting something better. Though the casting of Ronney Mara as Lisbeth did make me nervous at first due to her lackluster performance in the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” remake, seeing her shocking transformation from production photos and magazines spreads it looks like Salander has stepped off the page and into the real world. With Fincher in the captains seat I am very confident that come December I will be very pleased with the results.
And there you have it!
